Fall 2010 Plus Size Trend- Velvet

On the cusp of thirty, velvet holds a love/hate relationship with me. I remember velvet the first time around. Egads… or at least that was my experience.

Not Any. More.

Velvet is sexy, slinky, intriguing, and adds depth. Thanks to fashion forward plus size designers, the demand from us full figured and fashionable fa(t)shionistas, we can bask our shapes in the latest trend to walk down the runway for Fall 2010, as shown by Marc Jacobs, Chloe, and Zac Posen.

The key to velvet this time around, is to keep it sleek and simple. The added texture of velvet gives your shape definition and femininity as well as an understated luxe. Sheer insets ramp up the sex appeal, jackets add sophistication and ease, and dresses provide fashionable and favorable alternatives to the little black dress.

For plus size fashion, this does not elude us and here are my favorite picks:

  2. Beth Ditto for Evans
  3. Simply Be Velvet Leggings
  4. ASOS Curve Velvet Dress
  5. Anna Scholz Back Zipper Dress

    Looove this trend. Beautiful.

I have a dark teal silk velvet blazer by Alfani from about 4 years ago that I adore, but don’t get nearly enough wear out of. I refuse to buy velvet dresses because you tend to get crushed velvet butt print in the back unless you do nothing but stand in them. (And my hatred if velvet dresses comes from a long velvet dress I had to wear for a Madrigal group I was in…I spent more time steaming the butt print it seemed to always have, than I did wearing it!)

I love the look of velvet details. The Beth Ditto dress is awesome until you turn it around. I hate exposed zippers. Actually, it’s not the zipper per se, it’s the binding or whatever it’s called that holds the zipper, I hate when that is exposed on anything but especially velvet dresses.

I love the Beth Ditto dress, and I love velvet in general, but I hate how utterly unwashable it is, and how (unless you have a ton of money to get super-quality velvet) it tends to wear down to threadbare pretty fast if you wear it a lot (especially outerwear).

So I have a love-hate relationship with the trend. I think, as BigGirlBlue said, velvet might be good as detailing. Especially combined with military and lace, that could work stupendously for some outfits.
