Wal Mart is trying to revamp their stores to compete with Target, whereas Target is trying to fill the niche left by Mervyn’s and compete with Kohl’s. While Wal Mart’s buyers are finding some of the same items carried in Target, remodeling a lot of stores, and even gave their logo something of a make over, they have a lot of work to do in order to battle their reputation of carrying fashions that are 10 years past their due date. It’s going to take a lot of convincing to get customers who know Target can provide to drive to Wal Mart, especially in some cities where there are no Wal Marts, like Los Angeles.

I work at Walmart (ugh, I know, college blah blah) and I’ve noticed firsthand how much better the clothing selection has become. If you’re an in-betweenie like me (I’m a size 18, 5’6″, L/XL in shirts), even the Miley Cyrus (I know, I know) line is not bad at all, if you’re a trendy/younger dresser. The skirts and pants are rather wee, but the shirts and the shift dresses etc are extremely forgiving and can fit someone my size and even a bit bigger! There are new pieces coming in almost every week, and I’m sort of impressed. The OP line isn’t terrible either for casual t-shirts/tops/tanks/etc.

I personally can’t wear anything from the Just My Size line, but it does look really nice and modern, especially the winter dresses. I hope we get some of the Norma Kamali line soon! The dress on the left is a do-want for me.

I wish one of our Canadian stores — Zellers, perhaps — would strike a deal to carry Target’s plus lines. I think they’d find a great market. (And I laughed out loud at your ‘upscaling’ of the pronunciation of ‘Target’ into a pseudo-French name.)
