A step backwards in plus size fashion with Selfridges

email

Across the pond, UK’s department store Selfridges decided to pull it’s entire plus size department a few weeks ago.

In an age where more “real women” are celebrated in magazines, throughout the fashion scene, we have broken barriers on the catwalk, graced mainstream magazine covers, and just when we are at the brink of making real progress, Selfridges happens.

Up to a few weeks ago, plus size women could find the latest in Marina Rinaldi and other plus size designers who fashion fits for the fashion forward plus size woman. However, in the light of “updating its brand mix,” Seflridge’s has decided to cease catering to the plus size consumer.

Although the store says, “At present customers can find size up to a UK 18 in store,” and “We keep a couple of 18’s in the stock room. We don’t display them,” Selfridge’s shameful attempt to snub the fat girl because its brand mix is despicable.

Shame on you Selfridges….

I had an inkling about this in mid November when I went to Selfridges to try on something from the Anna Scholz collection. I walked all over the damn place and couldn’t find the plus collections at all. I asked an assistant who searched the database and couldn’t find Anna Scholz listed at all, neither could she find Marina Rinaldi. I hoped it must be a glich in the system, or a temporary thing, I really didn’t think that big ole Selfridges would withdraw the plus collections even though I know that other department stores have. MAJOR disappointment.

Wow, that’s really weak. So strange that a company should actually be moving backward on this when so many other companies are making some progress at last.
