ManiK MAGAZINE Puts Ethics in Perspective with Anti-PETA “Save the Apology” Ad

Remember that “Save the Whales” ad PETA unapologetically put out in an attempt to tell us fatties that by going vegan we will lose weight?

I KNOW YOU DO. If you don’t remember, let me refresh your memory:

Well, someone has done something about it- coming back with an ad with a 1-2 punch!

New York, NY, 11/06/2009: ManiK Magazine released their direct response today to PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) continuous abuse of publicly humiliating advertising campaigns that make the plus-size community the “punch line” in efforts to promote vegetarianism as opposed to eating meat.

Appalled by PETA’s advertising campaigns that push for the ethical treatment of animals at the plus-size community’s expense, ManiK kicks off their themed: INNOVATIVE ACTIVIST premiere issue scheduled for December with their Anti-PETA Ad of a plus-size vixen in an implied nude shot draped in fur that reads:

ANTI-PETA AD-MANIK MAGAZINE

“SAVE THE APOLOGY, LOSE THE SARCASM – I’D RATHER GO NAKED TRIMMED IN FUR.

STARRING NEW ACTIVISTS – PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ALL.

ManiK MAGAZINE

STANDING FOR SOMETHING WHILE FALLING FOR NOTHING TAKES GREAT STRENGTH BUT YOU               CAN BE BETTER AND DO BETTER.  STOP INSULTING OTHERS TO PROMOTE YOUR AGENDA.  GO                     ETHICAL FOR ALL!”

Manik Magazine founder, Selina Weekes, was outraged at PETA’s billboard posted in August 2009 in Jacksonville, Florida, that suggests overweight people are synonymous with whales and should lose the “blubber.”  Rather than be a silent advocate for the oppressed, Manik Magazine is asking readers to get involved by posting their Anti-PETA ad as a default picture on their social networking sites for one week, starting November 16-21, to show solidarity for their interactive campaign to stand up against ostracism and ridicule from organizations that subliminally degrade fuller figures.

Oh, God. I was so hopeful that this would be a positive response to PETA’s disgusting fat-phobic behaviour. But instead, it seems to involve associating fat people with animal murder — “trimmed in fur…Go ethical for all”??? F*cking hell, I have no words for this. Have the folks at ManiK never heard of intersectional oppression? “Hey, let’s fight anti-fat prejudice … with speciesism!” EPIC FAIL.

I have to agree with Vidya… As a fat rights activist, I was appalled by Peta’s campaign, but as a vegetarian, I also feel that it’s not only something I absolutely cannot get behind, but that it also reinforces Peta’s stereotypes of fat people as meat-eaters.

While it’s nice to see Manik standing up for fat people and showing PETA their endless assault towards larger bodies is degrading, draping a fat woman in what appears to be real fur is not the right way to do it. It’s only going to reinforce stereotypes that we don’t care about anything but where our next meal comes from.

I didn’t so much see it as a saying that fat people are meat-eaters. I saw it more as a “F*ck you, here’s a fat and fabulous woman in fur.” It was more of a low blow to PETA than a comment on fat people.

Granted, they could have taken the high rode, but I understand being pissed enough to flaunt the fur as “revenge” for PETA’s childish antics

    Peace,

I like the pro-fat pro-fur ad *just as much* as the anti-fat anti-meat ad, which is to say not at all. The thing I hate most about PETA is that they prompt immature people, even when justifiably angered, to react to their anti-things campaigns by indulging in those very things. Suggesting that fur is “ethical for all” is just disgusting. Do they know that a lot of that is cat or dog fur mislabeled as the fur of species we care less about killing?

I was hoping for the “My ‘blubber’ would rather go naked for the ethical treatment of all” statement rather than one that associates fat people with animal slaughter.

I’m with you, Rachel. There are plenty of “non-svelte” vegetarians.
