Mia Amber, Claire Mysko, and Stacey Rosenfeld Weigh in

Christian Louboutin says Barbie’s ankles are too fat for his signature pumps, so he is redesigning Barbie’s “arch” so that she can don his long lusted red soles. While his shoes rest in the dreams of many aspiring fashionistas, it seems Barbie eludes the grasp of the coveted red sole.

But beyond this redesign, to accommodate the “cankles,” What message does this send to our young women and those with already troubled self esteem images?

I am happy that there are women like Mia out here speaking out and making a difference. There is no way that Barbie has “cankles”. I can’t even believe anyone is even going there…what a mess!

Wow. It is unbelievable and as a woman with thick ankles I am outraged. But I also have to laugh. How ridiculous. As a little girl I certainly thought I would grow up to look like Barbie and received quite a rude shock when I didn’t. I think that Barbie’s ridiculously bent feet always tipped me off to the unreal nature of her physique. I figured that if one lived in high heels maybe one’s feet would stay frozen in that same bent position. My own experience tells me that without deliberate intervention, little girls are vulnerable to Barbie’s unreal representation even before some ignorant shoe maker got involved. Today’s models are too thin and although for some of them it is natural it isn’t for all of them. Many of them look like concentration camp victims and of course some of them are only fifteen and haven’t even developed a womanly body yet. The fashion industry should be held accountable and a variety of female sizes should be represented. All models should have a healthy diet by law. That’s how it would be if I were Queen of the World.
