Marie Claire adds Plus Size Column for Fashion

November seems to be a first for us in plus size fashion, first the cover of Glamour magazine, now the plus size woman has a column in Marie Claire. Enter in Ashley Flacon, a petite Cuban Curvy Fashionista, at 5’2” weighing in at 220 pounds!

As a plus size stylist, Ashley Falcon Shares her discontent and frustrations as a plus size fashionista, stating, “I’d need an elaborate pulley system and a can of Crisco to shimmy into the clothes I dress models in. Instead, I’m relegated to the plus-size racks, where trendy usually translates into “when’s your due date” empire waists and cinch-sack drawstrings. It’s not easy being chic, but it’s an epic struggle when you’re a big girl.”

Big Girl in a Skinny World by Ashley Falcon debuted today online at Marie Claire! In her debut issue, Ashley attempts to conquer denim for the Curvy Fashionista.

While Ashley grazed the immediate surface of the plethora of denim designers (Calvin Klein and Old Navy) for the Curvy Fashionista, she inevitably left out Curve specific denim designers like Svoboda, Embody denim, David Kahn, and PZI! There are plethoras of others out there, but for now, Ashley Flacon sharing fashion tips in Marie Claire is a step towards a positive direction for Plus Size Fashion being represented on a grander scale.

What do you think???

(P.S. You can find both Embody Denim and David Kahn jeans at Marie Denee, up to a size 24!)

What I like is that not only is she plus size, she’s petite — a segment of the plus size community that has often felt left on the sidelines of plus size fashion.

  3. I get so frustrated with the limited amount of fashionable plus size stores. But when I find something I like, I get it no matter what the price! :)

  4. I agree with Moe. Petite plus size is a sector that often gets look over.Being a petite plus size woman myself, it makes shopping (especially for jeans) an even bigger challenge. I always get odd looks when I say I’m petite, which is very frustrating. People should understand that petite doesn’t mean skinny, its means short (5’4 and under).

Thanks for sharing this info. I look forward to reading Ashley’s blog!

  5. Moe has a great point. It seems like people/retailers tend to group all plus size women together, but there really needs to be attention to detail about petites (and TALLS) as well. I’m a tall plus size lady myself and it’s frustrating to not find outfits in the right proportions.

I just replied below, but there are a few designers who make pants for the taller plus size diva! MU Jeans, Svoboda, David Kahn! I think I will look into a petite and tall post!

  6. Shon says:

I must say that it’s well overdue for magazines to finally add some style tips for plus size women. I live in a big city and it’s extremely difficult finding affordable (but not cheap) plus size clothes that don’t look like something my grandmother would wear. I’m 5’10″ and when I do find cute and trendy clothes, they are not too short. I look forward to reading more on this topic in upcoming issues.

    • Marie Denee says:

I second your opinion! A step in the long overdue direction! Makers USA Makes jeans for the Curvier woman but in longer legnths as well as Svoboda jeans! :)

  7. Mary says:

I am also plus size and 5’10″ and what’s more, I am very long-waisted. I don’t need long pants, I need longer tops! Plus size tops always fit too big but with too short of sleeves and too short in general for me. It sucks!

  8. I really think it is high time we finally just accept everybody for who they already are, please!
